When designing any solar energy system there are a number of factors to consider. With Ergosun, the process is much simpler than trying to incorporate glass PV panels onto your home.

Roof Design

Some homes have very simple roof lines and others have multiple roof slopes and peaks. Consider the following aspects that will affect the energy your roof can produce:

How much roof area do you have?
Consider direction, slope (pitch), area (free of exhaust stacks, chimneys, etc.), shade from trees, design elements (peaks, angles).

What is the Perfect Angle?
A rule of thumb for roof slope for solar is to divide your latitude in half (the angular distance north or south of the earth's equator).

Example - If you are on the 49th parallel the best angle is 24 ½ degrees, 45% Grade or 5 to 6:12 Slope.

Construction

Ergosun Solar Roof Tiles can be used on any residential roof designed for concrete or clay roof tiles.

The roof joists can be strapped with stringers with felt underlay with open joists or may be installed on a sheeted surface (solid plywood on joists).

No other engineering or modifications are required.

There are two wires that run from the solar tiled area of the roof to the inverters (normally located near the electrical panel or garage). On the roof, the wires are run between the tiles and roof surface – they do not penetrate the roof surface.

System Size

You can size your system simply by determining the amount of tiles you require based on roof size, energy needs or budget.

Each solarized roof tile can produce 13 watts of energy.
Therefore, 500 tiles x 0.013 = 6.5 kW system.

Power Inverters

The biggest system cost after the solarized roof tiles is the inverter. There are inverters available from many different manufacturers for virtually any size of solar roof system.

One or more? In some cases, splitting your solarized roof tiles into two zones (with half the roof tiles on one inverter and half on the other) and using two smaller inverters is more economical and may increase the efficiency of your system.

We use and recommend Fronius inverters. They offer a full line of residential inverters in a wide selection of sizes, they are very well built, dependable and easy to install. They also offer full remote energy reporting that monitors usage, cost and the amount of energy produced by the solar tiles. You can even monitor your system in real time from your mobile phone or tablet.

Installation

Roofing
Our solarized roof tiles can be installed by virtually any roofing contractor. To add our solar tiles to your new home, simply ask your builder to get a quote for the roof using concrete or clay roof tiles. Once the company has been awarded the contract to install the tiled roof, we will work directly with that company to coordinate the supply and installation of the solarized portion of the roof.

Electrical
We will work directly with your local electrical contractor to apply for any permits required, review the location of the inverter and power-disconnect as well as provide guidance for the installation and commissioning of the system.

Solarmass Support
Even though the work is performed by your roofing and electrical contractor, a fully trained Solarmass representative will assist during the planning and construction phase who will be onsite during the installation of our tiles and electrical components. They will work directly with the homeowner, general contractor or other designated manager of the project to ensure a seamless integration with the construction process is maintained.

Warranty

The Ergosun Solar Tiles are matched with the same protection warranty as the roof tiles used on the home.

The Ergosun Solar Tiles also come with an energy generation warranty: The energy output of the system will be greater than 80% of their production when new for 25 years.
